Abstract: The following text demonstrates a partial result from a research that contributed to the conclusion of a doctoral
dissertation in music defended at UNICAMP in February 2017. Documents from the second half of the nineteenth century
have been used to demonstrate the performance practice that took place in the city of Campinas, SP within the already
mentioned time frame. Indeed, local newspapers proved to be a valuable source by registering that Joaquim Delmont
played his sax-tromboni in the concert in homage to the visit of Carlos Gomes. The peculiarity of the instrument’s
nomenclature was one of the aspects that not only guided this text but also raise questions such as: What kind of instrument
was it? Was there a relationship with the “slide trombone? Who this musician was? What was that so specific about this
instrument to justify its presence in this concert? How was the performance practice like in the city of that time? The
answers, or clues, led to the hypothesis that such an instrument would be a model invented by Adolphe Sax in 1845 and
would be related to the trombone by its caliber and measurements.
Keywords: Sax-tromboni.
