GEOGRAPHIC INFERENCES FROM LITERARY CUTTINGS

Abstract

The project "Geography and Literature" aims to analyze literary works that offer subsidies for the analysis and interpretations of contents associated with geographic knowledge. In this text, the emblematic work of Euclides da Cunha, "Os Sertões", was chosen. It was written between the end of the 19th century and the threshold of the 20th century, reflecting the literary transition between symbolism and Brazilian modernism. The work comprises three parts: Earth, Man, and Fight, which offer important support for geographical analysis, in addition to the textual constitution itself.

In the first, he addresses the components of the physical nature of the Bahian hinterland, the scene of the Canudos War, a moment in which he makes an important description of the physical and ethnobotanical components; the second, from an anthropo-sociological perspective, although deterministic, considers the formative triad of the sertanejo (half-race-history); and finally, the Fight against the messianism of Antonio Conselheiro, founder of the Belo Monte camp, better known as Canudos, a confrontation that lasted four years, becoming a historic milestone in popular movements. Incidentally, it also presents a relationship between the passage of the "loss of chio" in the short story "A love story: Manuelzão's party", by Guimarães Rosa, establishing a relationship with the phenomenon observed in the karst sequences of São Desidério, western Bahia.
