Basic sanitation is essential to avoid negative impacts on the environment and public health. However, despite legislation and technological arrangements that can serve as an alternative to make sanitation services viable, advances need to be made. In Brazil, it is possible to see that basic sanitation services are provided very differently, with some regions having better rates than others. The purpose of this study was to present the basic sanitation scenario in Brazil and the main challenges for improving this service in the country and for environmental planning. The overview regarding environmental sanitation in Brazil was carried out through secondary data provided by the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS), the National Basic Sanitation Plan (PLANSAB) and the Brazilian Association of Public Cleaning and Special Waste Companies (ABRELPE). The data revealed that in relation to the water supply coverage index in different regions of Brazil, it is observed that the regions with the lowest rates are registered in the following locations: North and Northeast, the Central-West presented values close to the regions South and Southeast. Despite the challenges faced, Brazil has made progress in providing basic sanitation services. However, there remain some difficulties to be overcome, especially in certain regions.
