The research aims to indicate the state of readiness of Brazilian federal public universities regarding the implementation of a knowledge management system, based on the guidelines presented in ISO 30.401:2018. In addition, the research also aims to identify and characterize the critical success factors for the implementation of a GC model in Brazilian federal public universities that meets the requirements presented in ISO 30.401:2018. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative descriptive research was carried out, based on a bibliographic review. The research had two phases: the first focused on documentary research through the survey and analysis of the contents available on institutional websites and in the Institutional Development Plan (PDI) with reference to the Knowledge Management of Brazilian Federal Universities. In the second phase, an electronic questionnaire was applied to the professionals of the 63 Brazilian FUs. As the main results of the research, it was found that, despite being part of the strategic priorities of the FUs, Knowledge Management is still in the development phase in Brazilian federal universities. It was also possible to verify that the dimensions of ISO 30.401:2018 most developed are leadership (section 5), planning (section 6), context of the organization (section 4) and improvement (section 10). Finally, the research identified that the five critical success factors most relevant to the implementation of Knowledge Management in Brazilian FUs are processes and activities, information technology, training and education, organizational infrastructure and strategy, and objectives.
