Abstract

:  In the last decades, in Brazil, there has been an increase in flexible hiring of teachers for a given time, herein called “temporary teachers”, to work in primary and high school education. This article, having as its focus the universities of the State of Paraná, observes the increase in the number of teachers hired under temporary contracts. Based on data collected from the last 15 years, in the seven State Universities in the state of Paraná and through semi-structured interviews carried out with union representatives from the seven state institutions, we have analyzed the modality of hiring temporary teachers and the working conditions within this form of employment relationship. Data analysis from 2002 to 2017 shows the increase in recruitment of temporary teachers when comparing to the hiring of teachers through public contests. The former are precarious processes of hiring due especially to the contract instability and lack of access to the inherent rights of this job category, for instance, a career plan.
