Abstract

All human beings needed and will need care at some point in their lives, and Helena Hirata's book “Care: theories and practices” extends the study of care for the elderly, highlighting global population aging, the massive entry of women in the labor market – who are traditionally responsible for caring for family members – and the consequent urgency of seeking solutions for what is referred to as a care crisis. By comparing metropolises in Brazil, France and Japan, based on interviews with care workers in São Paulo, Paris and Tokyo, the author compiles data that indicate the similarities, differences and solutions existing in each of the countries, denoting the urgency of thinking about the subject and demanding public policies that address this problem, which, even where measures are being taken, is still far from being solved.
