Abstract

The paper aims to propose the concept of peripheralization as an appropriate framework for analyzing the overall changes that occurred in the capitalist system in recent decades. In the first section of the paper, we provide a brief analysis of the emergence, structure, and collapse of the primary social condition in the capitalist nations in the post-war era: the Welfare State, based on Abram de Swaan's reflections. In the second part, we aim to examine the expansion of the peripheral condition as a concept with suitable analytical potential to investigate the dismantling of the welfare state and the consequential developments in the dynamics of capitalism. To accomplish this, we utilize the ideas of Wolfgang Streeck and other contemporary social theory authors. Finally, this paper considers the appropriateness of the proposed theoretical framework and identifies potential issues for a research agenda centered on the concept of peripheralization in the global context.
