A VISUAL GLOSSARY FROM VILLAGE EXPERIENCE WITH POTIGUARA ETHNIC PEOPLE

Abstract

Indigenous culture corresponds to a set of particularities that symbolize a certain social group. Since before colonization, the Potiguara indigenous people have inhabited the coast of the state of Paraíba and are territorially distributed in 32 villages located in the municipality of Baía da Traição, on the North Coast of the Paraíba. Through research, while still graduating in graphic design, it was possible to record practices and elements of the daily life of the Potiguara, seeking through images to establish a narrative language that could reveal the cultural riches of these people to Paraíba society, in addition to provoking new reflections on traditions. and preservation of ancestral practices, using documentary photography and editorial design to construct the final work, resulting in a photobook prototype. The present work, in its outline, seeks to present how the use of a visual glossary, that is, a glossary that unifies the images together with the meanings attributed by the Potiguara themselves belonging to three villages in particular, Aldeia do Forte, Alto do Tambá and Lagoa do Mato, and can methodologically bring together graphic design and anthropological theory, seeking to give visibility to the narratives, senses and meanings attributed by the interlocutors.
