Resumo

A comparative study ot the anatomy ol the genital organs of 14 males and 47 females of Marisa planogyra from the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil and of 10 males and 1 female of Marisa cornuarietis from Porto Rico, revealed two significant interspecific differences in the male genital apparatus: 1) M. planogyra has only two glands on the penial sheath, while M. cornuarietis has 4; 2) the relation height/base of the penial sheath is 2.0-3.0 in M. planogyra, and 4.2-5.7 in M. cornuarietis. The presence of a rudimentary penis in the female genital apparatus is not a constant character for the Ampullaridae; its presence was very occasional in M. planogyra (frequency 8.5%) and did not occur in the only available female of M.
cornuarietis.
