OSTEOLOGIA CRANIANA E ASPECTOS EVOLUTIVOS DE Mycteria (AVES: CICONIIDAE)

Resumo

O gênero Mycteria (Ciconiidae) é composto por espécies com hipóteses de relacionamento filogenético controversas. O presente trabalho procurou descrever a osteologia craniana das quatro espécies representantes do gênero Mycteria, comparando com espécies representantes dos demais gêneros da família. A monofilia de Mycteria pode ser proposta com base nos seguintes caracteres osteológicos cranianos: (1) processo medial da mandíbula medialmente disposto e (2) tubérculo pseudotemporal desenvolvido, quando comparado com as demais espécies de Ciconiidae. Mycteria ibis e M. leucocephalus são grupos-irmãos sustentados pelas presença de: (1) fossa temporal profunda, (2) tubérculo T reduzido e (3) expansão caudal da fossa coanalis, quando comparada as demais espécies de Ciconiidae. Das espécies estudadas, a mais basal foi M. cinereus, e o táxon formado por M. ibis e M. leucocephalus é grupo-irmão de M. americana, sustentado pela presença da fusão total do lacrimal ao frontal, ao passo que nas demais espécies de Ciconiidae a sutura entre esses ossos é visível.
