Many germanic languages have registered the occurence of the word mara/ mære and other variants. This noun designates the name of a series of creatures, generally feminine, which are related to nightmares and certain night attacks with sexual components, assaulting mostly men. This paper offers for the first time in Portuguese language the translation of some folkloric materials regarding these creatures, mainly in Deutsch. We later offer a brief contextualization of the cultural concepts underlying the mara narratives in Scandinavian societies and propose a brief analysis of the main elements which constitute these narratives.
