Abstract

SUMMARY Objective: The goal was to evaluate the knowledge and conduct of dental surgeons in the Family Health Program (PSF) in João Pessoa in concern with child mistreatment (MTIs). Material and Methods: In this transversal and descriptive study the sample was stratified with 30% (n=54) of the 180 professionals and then distributed through the city’s five sanitary districts. A researcher carried out the data collection by means of a form containing objective and subjective questions. A descriptive statistic analysis with quantitative and qualitative interpretation was then carried out. Results: It was verified that: 85.2% did not obtain information about MTIs upon graduation, and 77.8% did not seek further information. Only two professionals knew how to adequately define MTIs, and one knew how to classify it. Forms of MTIs were identified as: the actions related to physical (79.6%), psychological (81.5%), sexual (88.9%) abuse and negligence (64.8%). The signs deemed least perceptible were physical (50%) and sexual (3.7%) abuse, respectively. Suspicions about MTIs appeared with 22 participants (41%), and talking to the parents was the most adopted conduct by suspecting professionals (64.3%) and non-suspecting professionals (31.3%). Uncertainty with suspicions was the main reason for not denouncing them, reported by 28.6% of the professionals who suspected, and 50% of those who did not suspect. Conclusion: There is the need to implement continuing education programmes about MTIs in the PSF of João Pessoa. This will allow preparation for dental surgeons to conduct themselves actively in detecting and denouncing suspicious or confirmed cases of violence against children. DESCRIPTORS Violence.
