Abstract

The present article has the intention to investigate in the origin of the quack medicine in America in XVI century. The traditional medicine was the practice of health and treatment for the three groups that initiated the integration of the American colonial society: the Europeans, the Natives and the Africans. The autobiographical text of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Naufragios [Castaways], it is a very particular testimony of how the catholic religion and the old traditions of the Indians could get together and give the initiation of the American quack medicine.
