SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS AND JOB GENERATION FROM THE FARMED SHRIMP PRODUCTION CHAIN

Resumo

This study analyzes the econornic and social irnpacts of shrirnp farming in Brazil. The objectives ofthe study were to present a discussion on sustainable developrnent of the shrirnp industiy in Brazil and estirnate irnpacts of the production chain on job and incorne generation. Results indicate that the number of direct and indirectjobs generated by the industry surpasses byfar the number ofjobs generated by other industries located in the sarne areas. Incorne generation was also rnuch greater for shrirnp production as compared to other industries. The discussion on sustainable developrnent of shrirnp farrning in Brazil concludes that there must be a balance beiween production technologies that preserve environmentally protected areas and provide the sustainable exploitation ofrnangrove areas.
