Abstract

This paper analyzes the evolution of social inequality in metropolitan areas of Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza, from 1981 to 2008. First of all, the paper presents the specificities of these locations, which have a relative backward on economic performance and a huge social debt. The performance of social inequality in main Northeast metropolitan areas is identified by the study of social and occupational structures, which withdrew because of the economic stagnation of the 90’s. Beginning in 2004, the increase in governmental programs resulted in a greater reduction of poverty. Nevertheless, there are not effective mechanisms to promote social mobility. It is necessary to implement a “distributive development” model capable of promoting a structural impact and aiming at the reduction of social inequality.
