Abstract

This paper aims to analyze unemployment in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre (RMPA), Brazil, in the 2000s, with data of the Employment and Unemployment Research. Firstly it identifies and interprets the general trends of the unemployment regarding to incidence, stock and duration; secondly, it examines evidence about the sources of livelihood of the unemployed workers; and third, it analyzes unemployment according to demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. The study concludes that unemployment has experienced a significant reduction in the RMPA throughout the 2000s. The favorable macroeconomic environment — especially from 2004 until the third quarter of 2008 -, increased the capacity of the economy to generate work opportunities and made possible a decline of the unemployment to much lower levels compared to those existent in the end of the previous decennium.
