Abstract

The aim of this work is to to measure the impact of technological changes on labor demand in 14 sectorsof Brazilian industry (1985-99). It shows how the technological component appears in the firm's cost minimization problem, by linking two different literatures: technological progress and labor demando We isolare in the srochasric trend the technical factors, whose behavior indicares whcther the technological change is neutral or labor/capiral saving. The choice of Kalman Filter as instrument to estimate a strucrural time series model, makes it possible to capture (with the stochastic trend) the non neutral technological progress effects on labor demand. The results suggest that the change in production technique had a negative influence on manufacturing labor demand. However the signs found on the post-Real period indicare thar this siruarion is being inverted in some segments of industry.
