Abstract

The central theme of this article is the analysis of trade union practices in the economic globalization processes. In particular, the author seeks to understand how the process triggered by the Campaign for Decent Work Towards and Beyond 2014, an action developed by Building and Wood Workers International (BWI) during the World Cup in Brazil, pushed the internationalization of construction unions in the country. The experience of BWI in adopting strategies aimed at large-scale sporting events, bargaining with the World Cup organizers and the lack of national coordination among Brazilian unions resulted in the predisposition to participate in the international campaign and strengthen ties with the Global Union federation (GUF). An unprecedented national agenda of negotiations was set up by Brazilian unions and interfered in the developments of locally established bargaining. The results of this campaign make evident that the trade union priorities towards local negotiations can implicate not only as a brake on international practices, but, also, as potentialities.
