Abstract

The metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro (RMRJ) has the highest average commuting time from home to work, according to Census Data (2010). Faced with the relation between urban mobility and the quality of life, this article aims to describe commuting from RMRJ considering spatial criteria for districts and municipalities, highlighting the travel time in these flows and places of destination and origin of commuters. It was possible to identify, for example, different patterns of travel time between cities as far away from the center, with effects on turnout and informality in the labor market. Municipalities of the periphery have high travel time and low participation rate and low commuting time and high informality. With this analysis it is possible to draw some light on the relation between urban mobility and access to the labor market, thereby helping to think of the implications for public policy and regional development.
