Abstract

In this article I propose a discussion about ride-hailing platforms based on the experiences and perceptions of female drivers in the city of Juiz de Fora/MG. To do this, I use data collected in a WhatsApp group with female drivers from the city, between 2020 and 2021, in interviews conducted with some of them in 2021 and in institutional materials from the companies, mainly Uber and 99App. I argue that ride-hailing platforms have not lived up to their promises of flexibility and women face specific challenges. I point out that the algorithmic management of labour and the platforms' business model are impediments to good labour conditions for female drivers. I demonstrate, for example, that the companies propose technological solutions to cases of gender-based violence but focus only on female passengers and do not take responsibility for the working conditions of female drivers.
