This paper addresses the concrete uses of the individual micro-entrepreneur’s (MEI) legal status by graphic designers. These uses were identified through the content analysis of 15 semi-structured interviews. This analysis showed that in addition to the uses already pointed out by literature - as disguised salaried employment and by actors who do not fit the original profile of the policy - graphic designers mobilize the MEI status in a context of absence of institutional regulation of the profession, and of demands for independence and formalization in the labour market, configuring a hybrid form of working: the irregular formality. We argue that policy’s uses must be understood beyond the logic of deviation from the norm, and should be framed in terms of a grey zone of labour and employment relations.
