Abstract

Jorge Carrillo Viveros is a professor at the Colegio de la Frontera Norte and one of the most important sociologists in Mexico. Doctor in Sociology from Colegio de Mexico (COLMEX), he is recognized as one of the greatest specialists in the maquiladora industry and in topics involving work and technology in the automotive, electronics and aerospace sectors. For over 40 years, he has been studying the maquiladora industry at the border with the United States and has been a pioneer in research on the Ford plant, installed in Hermosillo, Sonora, in 1986. His study mirrored the condition of Ford as a symbol of modernization of the Mexican automotive sector, which was developing at that time due to the import substitution policy, already entering the context of Japanese-inspired lean production. His discussions on automakers, auto parts companies and clusters always start from valuing the regional context, leading him to define himself as a specialist in analyzing the way in which regions and specific industrial sectors coexist and influence each other. In 2015, he received the Baja California State Award for Science and Technology and is currently investigating the impact of Industry 4.0, robotization and outsourcing on industrial employment.
