Abstract

The body, in Foucauldian understanding, is not only the material structure of a living organism, but also (and above all) a container element of subjectivation practices, on which the onslaught of knowledge-power relations focus. The last volume of a research on non-verbal discursive materialities, this work, subsidized by the Discourse Analysis of Foucault's perspective (carrying out in a more theoretical than analytical approach) investigates the construction of (effects of) meanings enunciated by the body of the French actor François Sagat performing Saartjes Baartman, the Black Venus. For this purpose, improvements in Foucault's theories on the functioning of discourse are taken as a theoretical reference. The hypothesis is that there is, among the enunciative possibilities, a place of empathy that cannot be ignored when one intends to question discursive authorization regimes. The results indicate that the body can be read as the materiality of discourses, even contributing to the visibility of subjects who are discursively restricted.
