PROMOTION AND PREVENTION IN MALE SEXUAL HEALTH: CHALLENGES OF JOSE PINHEIRO 1 FAMILY HEALTH TEAMS
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the implementation of actions driven to men’s health, particularly in the sexual field, conducted by José Pinheiro 1 Family Health Teams (FHT). Methodology: This was a descriptive and retrospective study, performed by means of analysis of documents, records of attendance and educational activities, in addition to medical records and sexually transmitted infections notification forms, reported by the professionals of the Family Health Teams. Interviews were also conducted with 18 men enrolled in those teams’ areas, and responses were evaluated through content analysis. Results: There was a lack of educational activities targeted to sexual health and to men. According to the documentary records, it is justified by the low demand of men for the service, overload of professionals’ activities and by the predominance of the gender aspect, reasserting that women search health services more frequently. It was also noticeable a lack of staff training in active pursuit of these men, especially in a sexual nature approach. Conclusion: According to the focus herewith given, to increase the promotion of men’s health with regards to STIs and HIV there should be health education activities aimed at promotion, prevention and treatment for the population as a whole and also for health professionals, who should have a technical training according to their assignments.
