EFFECTS OF THE USE OF FLUOXETINE HYDROCHLORIDE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF MINERALIZED TISSUES IN RATS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
Abstract
Introduction: Fluoxetine hydrochloride is the most widely prescribed antidepressant in clinical practice worldwide. It inhibits potently and selectively the re-uptake of serotonin. Many collateral effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors were evaluated in previous studies, but their effects on mineralized tissues in rats have not been established yet. Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the effect of pharmacological treatment using fluoxetine on the development of mineralized tissues in rats. Methods: Searches were made corresponding to the last 15 years in the databases BBO, LILACS, SciELO, PUBMED/MEDLINE and ISI WEB OF KNOWLEDGE, using the descriptors: Fluoxetine and Bone; Fluoxetine and Tooth. Results: From a total of 66 studies found, 26 were associated with fluoxetine on mineralized tissues, of which only 12 articles met the inclusion criteria for this review. Conclusion: In this study, it was observed that fluoxetine hydrochloride was able to promote changes in growth and development of mineralized tissues (such as bone and teeth) in rats by modifying the neuroendocrine metabolism of serotonin.
