DENTAL BLEACHING AS A STEP PRIOR TO RESTORATION OF SEVERE DISCOLORED TEETH

Abstract

Introduction: Tooth color is an important factor for the harmony of the smile which represents a point of concern by both professionals and patients. Besides the aesthetic relevance, bleaching prior to the restorative treatment may guide the adoption of less invasive procedures that contribute to the preservation of a sound tooth structure. Thus, this report highlights the role of tooth bleaching in restorative treatment decision making. Case Report: Male patient, 30 years, looked for specialized dental service due to dissatisfaction about darkening elements #11 and #21. Firstly, indirect ceramic veneers were indicated and in order to achieve a better aesthetic result tooth whitening was secondly proposed. As soon as the combination of non-vital and home bleaching techniques succeeded, a new treatment planning was drawn approaching the use of direct composite resin veneers. Resin veneers (elements #11, #12, #21, #22), fiber post cementation (elements #11 and #21), and cosmetic adjustment (element #23) were made, resulting in smile aesthetics and patient satisfaction. Conclusion: Tooth bleaching as a step prior to restorative treatment of discolored teeth guided the treatment planning design and contributed to the adoption of less invasive procedures.
