Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the physiological state of school basketball and handball athletes, and then to verify how they respond to the training loads applied at school. Material and Methods: A total of 18 school athletes aged 14 to 16 years – 11 boys from basketball team and 7 girls from handball team – participated in this study. After 48 hours without training, we applied the psychometric instrument POMS, a questionnaire of sleep and rest standards, a questionnaire on training and school activities, registration of ANAC and blood collection for further analysis of CK, LDH and CRP. We used t test for one sample to compare the results obtained with the normal reference values of the studied variables. Results: boys trained 4.5 hours/week divided into three sessions and showed normal values for CK (33.0 ± 3.4 U/l), LDH (252.7 ± 34.7 U/l), CRP (2.9 ± 3.4 mg/l), POMS (97.5 ± 6.8) and level of daytime sleepiness (6.5 ± 2.4); only MAC (3.42 ± 1.8) was found to be above the reference values. Girls trained eight hours/week divided into four sessions. CRP (5.1 ± 5.24 mg/l), level of daytime sleepiness (11.6 ± 4.8) and POMS (108.6 ± 14.71) were found to be above the normal levels, whereas CK (37.0 ± 15.19 U/l), LDH (312.7 ± 114.77 U/l), MAC (1.8 ± 0.91) were within the normal values. The averages above normal limits are explained by some individual values. Conclusion: boys respond to imposed training loads with no physiological changes, and girls demand individual care in particular cases. DESCRIPTORS Health Status. School Athletes.
