Evaluation “In Vitro” of Surface Behavior of Some Glass Ionomer Cements

Abstract

SUMMARY Objective: To evaluate the “in vitro” surface behavior of five glass ionomer cements, verifying the color change when submitted into colour dye and three different types of common drink. Material and Methods: Five restoration ionomer cements were selected: Vidrion Râ (S.S. White- Brazil, CIV conventional type), Vitro Filâ (DFL- Brazil, CIV conventional type), Vitro Fil LCâ photopolymerizable (DFL – Brazil, CIV type resin-modified), Magic Glass Râ (Vigodent - Brazil, CIV conventional type), Vitremer Restauradorâ (VT) (3M - USA, CIV type resin-modified). Two standard cavities were prepared on the vestibular face of 30 bovine teeth. Proof bodies were immersed into basic fuchsina dye at 0.5% and three types of common drink: Coca-Cola, grape flavour Fanta and coffee. Every 24 hours the teeth were brushed, washed and returned to the renewed solution. After 7 days they were transferred to another container with another type of drink. After 35 days, the proof bodies were washed, dried and compared. Each body was rated for wear discoloration and roughness. Results: In concern In concern with wear and discoloration, the least changed was Vitremer Restaurador (31.7%), with the proofs rating: Vidrion R (24.6%), Vitro Fil and Magic Glass R both rated the same(16.2%) and Vitro Fil LC (11.3%). Regarding the roughness, Vitremer Restoring presented a surface performance (30%), with Vitro fil LC (19.5%), Magic Glass R (18.4%), Vidrion R (16.8%) and Vitro Fil (15.3% Conclusion: Glass ionomer cements are good restoring materials despite presenting changes to its coloration and surface.
