Interference of Iodine and Goitrogenic Foods in the Appearance and Evolution of Thyroid Diseases
Abstract
SUMMARY Objective: To analyze the several aspects and factors that regulate the biosynthesis of thyroidal hormones, in the municipal district of Cabaceiras, where the prevalence of thyroid dysfunctions is high. Material and Methods: 180 scholars with ages between 9 and 14 were appraised, in the municipal district of Cabaceiras-PB, by the use of a questionnaire, which included origin, sex, cassava use (frequency) and an evaluation of urinary iodine excretion. SPSS 10.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: there was male prevalence; the average age was 11.34±1.6 years old; 54.4% (98/180) people were of white race; 57.2% (103/180) came from the urban area; 31.6% (57/180) consume cassava with a frequency of (>03 times a week) and 33.35 (60/180) presented <100lg/l of urinary iodine excretion, which indicates that there is inadequate rates of insufficient amounts of iodine according to the WHO.
