Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective: Analyze the expectations of women on the verge of undergoing a cytological exam and identify what motivated them to do so. Material and Methods: A transversal descriptive-type model with a qualitative approach was carried out in the Unidades Básicas de Saúde da Família in the city of Campina Grande – Paraíba – Brasil, during the month of October, 2004, together with a questionnaire containing objective questions and a half-structured interview guide. The sample constituted of 25 women who were in the waiting room expecting to undergo a Pap smear. The interviewees were questioned about what motivated them to undergo the exam; if they knew the purpose of the exam, how it was done, how they felt while doing it, and if they had any worries concerning the exam. Results: Most of the users reported that they underwent the exam as a means for prevention, showing knowledge about the purpose, but the procedure was unknown to many. Embarrassment during the exam and fear of the result were the predominant feelings. Conclusions: Results pointed out the importance of health education and the need to educate, even more, the population in the direction of promoting health practice, besides the essential need of humanizing the service. DESCRIPTORS Women’s health. Uterus colon cancer. Colpocytological exam.
