Legal Implications of Drug Prescription in Dentistry

Abstract

SUMMARY Objective: To verify the acquaintance of dental surgeons in Araçatuba with legal aspects of drug prescription. Material and Methods: 158 dental surgeons of the region of Araçatuba - São Paulo - Brasil were interviewed through the filling out of a standard questinaire, based on the legislation in force. Results: The name and the registration number issued by the Regional Dentistry Council are used as professional identification on the prescription from by 97.5% of the professionals. Regarding patient identification, 32.1% of the dental surgeons do not write the patient´s name and national ID number (RG) on the prescription. Only 59.9% know the difference between drugs of external and internal use. Even though 94.5% prescribe medication, 58% of the interviewees consider important to keep a copy of the prescription, but they do not do it. Conclusion: There is a discrepancy concerning the overall content and necessary identification elements on the prescription from. The professionals confuse drugs of external and internal use. There is negligence or ignorance concerning the importance of keeping a copy of prescriptions. DESCRIPTORS Drug prescription. Forensic dentistry. Drug Legislation.
