Psycogenic aspects influence in Burning Mouth Syndrome

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this paper was to characterize the emotional profile in patients with burning mouth syndrome. Materials and Methods: Aspects of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) symptoms and their impact on the subjectivity of individual carriers, considering the socio-historical context in which they find themselves. Twenty-four individuals with BMS were examined considering the clinical manifestations of the disease, and interviewed in order to determine the subjective aspects of the syndrome. Results: The results indicate that the states of anxiety and depression in individuals with BMS are significantly related to symptomatology. Altered emotional states expressed were expressed through cancerphobia, resentment, inability to make decisions compatible with their desires and the resorting to religious and spiritual callings. Conclusion: It was concluded that emotional alterations affect the subjectivity of BMS carriers and are relevant in the appearance and persistence of the burning symptoms present in these individuals. In addition, the subjective aspects caused by the syndrome may play a role in reshaping their subjectivity. Burning Mouth Syndrome. Psychosomatic Medicine. Anxiety. Depression.
