Abstract

of low toxicity to pulp tissue they are commonly used as a protector of the pulp-dentin complex under restorative materials as amalgam and composite resin The present study aimed to verify, through literature review, the bond strength of glass ionomer cement to composite resin restorations highlighting questions about pre- treatment of the surface of the material, effect of the cure process and available techniques. The review was conducted in the following databases: PUBMED, CAPES - Periodicals, SCIELO, BBO, BIREME and LILACS. The selection of the papers was performed using the following descriptors in Portuguese/English: cimento de ionômero de vidro/glass ionomer cement, resina composta/composite resin, resistência de união/bond strength, propriedades mecânicas/mechanical properties. Articles published between 1995 and 2010 were analyzed. Initially, 110 articles were selected and, after carefully filtering, 23 articles were separated. Among various options presented in the literature to promote adhesion between the glass ionomer cement and composite resin it can be observed that different variables are involved. The composition of the cement, the elapsed time between placing the cement and the completion of the restoration, and the technique are important factors. Bonding between resin modified cement and composite resin presented higher values than for the conventional cement. Bonding between ionomer cement and composite resin was indicated to be performed immediately, regardless of the cement. The use of self-etching adhesives increased the bond strength when applied before the initial setting of the glass ionomer. Adhesives with a composition similar to that of the resin-modified ionomer increased the bond strength after the initial setting of cement. The technique of co-polymerization appeared to increase the bond strength between the materials.
