THE LIMITS OF INTERVENTION IN NUTRITION

Abstract

Objective: In this article we used concepts and categories to discuss results of an evaluative research on a Basic Nutritional Support Program for families of low income, the “Pro-food”. It aims at identifying the limits of the government’s intervention in the problematic of starvation. Material and methods: Considering that interventions in nutrition need to be systematically appraised, we assume that this intervention should be assessed, both for necessary corrections and/or for its continuity or not by using the information that translate the socio-economic condition face to findings on biological and social aspects of the Pro-food’s beneficiaries. Results: From a critical review on the model of the current capitalist society with its social policies framed in a neoliberal profile, we have analyzed the existence of the program per itself, for an understanding of support public policies looking for intervention in an attempt to accommodate situations that would lead to damages in the capitalist productive system. Conclusion: In conclusion, we identified the structural limits of the capitalist production way as limits to intervention. Once the public power, represented by the State, disregards the situation that determines malnutrition, it also disrespects that such situation works as structural impediment for the government’s actions which turn to be ineffective, hence contributing to the maintenance of a background that should solved.
