Abstract

This article seeks to portray the importance of handicrafts in the life of the Guarani Mbya living in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro - "Costa Verde" from a cultural, economic and social perspective, considering the intra-village context and the relationship with the surrounding society. In the 1970s the Costa Verde region underwent an intense process of socio-spatial reorganization motivated by numerous development (and tourism) projects financed or sanctioned by the Brazilian State, which stimulated a strong tourism-real estate speculation in the region and caused impacts on the lives of the population. The article intends to show the importance of handicrafts produced by the Guarani Mbya as a cultural manifestation, a form of resistance and a resource for the subsistence of this indigenous people who live on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the city of Paraty. To formulate and discuss the argument I make use of my ethnographic experience with the aforementioned partiality and the ethnographic data/analysis carried out by other authors.
