Abstract

The article analyses the implementation of policies and actions to develop tourism in the state of Amazonas, starting in the 1980s, focusing on the two áreas: ecological tourismo, aimed at exploring nature the forest and rivers of Amazon region; cultural tourismo, starting with the Parintins festival. The study shows that by focusing on nature, the tourism policy of the state government, as well as tourism companies explore images and representations that portray the Amazon as a wil and exotic place – aspects originally formed during the missions of European travellers in the region. In this way, tourism replicates and reinforces the imaginary of a region where nature is decisive, including in the over-termination of amazonian cultures and populations.
