Abstract

ABSTRACT:
The aim of this article is to investigate the presence of post-memory in the documents that refer to the life of Binoit Paulmier, also known as Içá-Mirim or Essomericq, the son of the Carijó chief Arosca who was taken to France in the 16th century on board the ship L’Espoir. The productions of the descendants of this distinguished character serve as a starting point for our discussion: one by his great-grandson, Abbot Jean Paulmier, and another by Dorothée de Linares, fourteen generations later. Memory studies and the research that has been carried out in the field of post-memory have served as a theoretical basis for mapping the meanings that run through the speeches of these subjects. Indeed, we were able to draw a picture of the impactful presence of an indigenous Carijó on the lives of his descendants, as well as shedding
light on an extraordinary situation: that of an indigenous Brazilian who became an aristocrat and left a long legacy to future generations.
