This work adresses the symbolic relationships presente in photographs published in newspapers, as well as the investigation of the meanings that these images express and the evaluation of their aesthetic value. To this end, three photographic records from the collections of Francisco França, Mônica Câmara and Rizemberg Felipe will be considered as empirical objects. In this analysis, we resort to the theoretical-methodological path proposed by Kress and van Leeuwen, which is based on Visual Grammar, considering its representational, interactive and compositional aspects. With the results obtained it was possible to conclude that these aspects constitute a mechanism for understanding the discourses that permeate the representation of socially significant subjects in photojournalistic images.
