THE PRIVATE LIBRARY AND ITS SOCIAL FUNCTION: a space of readers' (in) formation

Abstract

It analyzes the contribution of the private library known as Carmeval for the readers’ formation. Presents the main types of library and discourses concerning the reading, readers’ formation, and citizenship. It characterizes the Carmeval Library and its users, as well as identifying satisfaction, reasons for the search of the unit and the contribution of the library for the readers’ formation. It is a field research with a qualitative and quantitative boarding that investigates the founder of the Carmeval Library and 10.5% of its users, by means of one Biblionline, João Pessoa, v. 4, n.1/2, 2008 questionnaire, presenting questions on the profile, opinions and suggestions related to the Library and its role in the readers’ formation and incentive the practical readers. The analysis and results of the collected data displayed in tables. It concludes that the library comes assuming the role of a public library and suggests, amongst other actions, its availability in Internet, and a specific quantity for the infantile public and bigger spreading.
