Abstract

This research investigates the use of scientific journals in the area of Library and Information Science by the pupils of the 2004.1 term at the Federal University of Paraíba – UFPB, for elaboration of their final course work. The aim was to focus the journals as an important vehicle for the scientific communication, its origin and evolution. The methodology is characterized by a quantitative research, using as data collection instrument the application of a questionnaire. The exploratory analysis involved the mapping of ten scientific journals, in both printed and electronic format, edited regularly in the area of Library and Information Science. The results allows to affirm that the journal more consulted during the course as well as in this period of elaboration of the monograph, stands out the journal Ciência da Informação, using the journals more frequently in the electronic format in relation to the printed paper. Among those students, some expressed difficulty encountering themed research, due to the fault of sufficient archives in the areas they were interested in, and/or fault of archives in their own language. In conclusion, those of the 2004.1 term preferred the electronic format. It was ended that those of the period 2004.1 consult specialized journals in the area of Library Science giving preference to the electronic format as complement to the printed one.
