The “UGLY DUCKLING”: MUSEOLOGICAL REFLECTIONS ON THE FIRST BRAZILIAN COMPUTER

Abstract

The history of computing and studies on digital electronic computers spans countries, the United States and the Soviet Union, featuring the construction of revolutionary machines: Electronic Numerical Integrator Computer - ENIAC and Small Electronic Calculation Machine - MESM, respectively. In the Brazilian scenario, it did not happen differently, this objective work presents the first Brazilian computer, the result of a project at the University of São Paulo (USP). As a methodology, using bibliographical research, the results point to the importance of the “ugly duckling” for Brazil as a heritage of science and technology.

Author Biographies

Alegria Benchimol, Federal University of Pará

PhD in Information Science from the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT/UFRJ-ECO) in 2015. Master in Information Science, since 2009, from the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT/UFF) and Graduated in Literature (Portuguese and French) from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). Permanent Professor of the Postgraduate Program in Information Science at the Federal University of Pará (PPGCI) and Collaborating Professor of the Postgraduate Program in Sociocultural Diversity (PPGDS), at Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. Works in the areas of Scientific Communication and documentation of scientific collections. Retired in 2019 from the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi.

Roberto Lopes dos Santos Júnior, Federal University of Pará

He has a degree in Architecture from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (2003), a Master's degree in Information Science from the UFF/IBICT agreement (2009) and a PhD in Information Science from the IBICT/UFRJ agreement (2014). He worked as a substitute professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, currently holding the position of assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture and does not have a master's degree in Information Science, both from the Federal University. of Pará. We have experience in the areas of Architecture and Information Science, with an emphasis on historical and epistemological studies in both areas, in addition to analyzes related to scientific communication/Scientometrics, interdisciplinarity and document preservation.
