Abstract

This paper aims to understand how the law of legal deposit is used in the process of preservation and transmission of memory in the state of Piaui, we also analyze that law from its beginning until the application given by authors in Piauí in the depository library Cromwel de Carvalho. We want to know the factors that argue the breach of law on the part of depositors. Considering the specificity of the investigated problem, we start from a literature review and a subsequent field research that addressed the issue through semi-structured interviews in order to understand the studied situation from the standpoint of the participants (the manager of the library in question and the authors who had works published in the state). To this end, it was necessary a qualitative analysis of data and further theoretical readings of Maia (2003), Campello (2006), Pinto (2008) among others. Therefore, the articulation of information, memory and built heritage buttress the development of this paper, since we enable an understanding of the importance of law in preserving the memory as cultural heritage.
