Abstract

Presents some thoughts about a) the need for knowledge of new tools used in information processing, in view of the teaching of descriptive representation and displaying metadata as the enablers of descriptive cataloging and b) as has been done teaching cataloging Librarianship in the course of the Federal University of Ceará - Fortaleza Campus - and its implications. The methodology was accomplished, first, a literature on the subject, by which it was possible to have access to the work of theorists like Arellano, Assumption, Lancaster, among others. Undertook a study of the proposal for a new cataloging code called Resource Description and Access (RDA), given by the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR (JSC AACR), responsible for revision of AACR, as though still in process preparation, must replace the AACR soon, so that warned about the need for knowledge of this tool by teachers and librarians in cataloging.
