A performance analysis of his compositions’ techniques for this instrument in the fantastic symphony

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to observe and analyze the use of the alto trombone in Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, through a case study on the subject. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the result of such a case study; presenting, therefore, three possibilities of execution of the work, taking into account factors described in this article. The research is divided into three parts, the first being a brief contextualization of the emergence of the trombone in the symphony orchestra until its use by Hector Berlioz; the second, an exposition about Berlioz's view of the trombone, and also its use in his Symphonie Fantastique; and third part, there is the case study itself.
The results obtained show some factors that the orchestra trombonist, especially the first trombone, must consider when performing an orchestral work based on historically informed performance.
