Abstract

This work proposes to review the book by Arthur de Gobineau, a french intelectual who wrote the Essay on the inequality of human races, originally published in 1853, ( first publication in portuguese in 2021). Gobineau launches a serie of arguments that served as basis of scientific racism, social darwinismo and the concept of aryan from eugenics. Therefore, a critical reading of this work makes it possible to understand nowadays how the author observes the racial theme, and how his arguments influenced some Brazilian intellectuals who discussed the racial issue in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Brazil.
