Abstract

Written in 1951, censored in 1953 and staged in 1957, the play Sortilégio, by Abdias do Nascimento, was elaborated in accordance with the objectives of the Teatro Experimental do Negro, which aimed to end the stereotypes of the black in the national cultural scene and enable appreciation of the artists of African origin. The question of the future birth of a mixed-race child frightens the white wife of the dark doctor, triggers her murder and the escape from husband who seeks his redemption in a place of candomblé that he had previously rejected. From the perspective of Fanon´s on racism, colonialismo and skin color and the perspective of the Greek tragedy (Aristotle) will analyzed, on the one hand, the inter-racial relations in Brazil with slave-based roots that reveal prejudice, discrimination, identity and acceptance. And, on the other hand, Dr. Emanuel´s desire to seek his social ascension through marriage with a white woman. This atitude reflects  personal ideology of colonial origen.
