The mode of production occupies in the materialist conception of history, that is, in the conception of Marx and Engels, a prominent position for the understanding of the historical development of human societies. The mode of production occupies this position even though the two authors did not dedicate a particular work to the subject, their reflections on this question are widely dispersed. It is with this in mind that the present paper deals grosso modo with their understanding of what mode of production means, thus recovering the clues left by the two Germans, but only after exposing a criticism addressed to them (by Patnaik), so that in the end the criticism with the clues will be confronted.
