This article tries to expose the notions of war and peace in the philosophy of alterity from Emmanuel Levinas. The philosopher sees metaphysics of war as dominant in the western ontological tradition in which he sees allergy towards other, competition, struggle that always opposes one to another, remaining each one closed in his own effort to survive, and identifies in this the being´s law as war. Claiming ethics as first philosophy, Levinas searches one way out of systemic totality that, in his view, destroys individuality and alterity as well, proposing the notions of fraternity, Face, Infinity as ethical rupture with what he calls ontological totalitarianism. Thus, this ethical openness offers itself as a possibility of thinking peace as hospitality and welcoming of the other, breaking ontological totalitarianism which founds political totalitarianism.
