The purpose of this article is to elucidate some elements of Sigmund Freud's legacy that affect the relationship between individual and society in Theodor Adorno's thought, based on the appropriation of Freud's social psychology arranged in Adorno's critical theory. To do so, Adorno's dialogue with the neo-Freudian revisionists in the 1920s and 1930s will be presented in order to understand the merits and mistakes of these theorists regarding the reception of Freud's psychoanalysis in the context of Adorno's critical theory; next, Freud's assertiveness will be demonstrated in explaining the individual constitution and the social institutions that produce subjectivity by resorting to the Freudian interpretation of parricide perpetrated by the primeval horde; so that, finally, the points of convergence and divergence between Freud's social thought and Adorno's critical theory can be presented, especially with regard to the relationship between individual and society.
