Abstract

The tribute to Prof. Edmilson offers me an opportunity to reflect on philosophy itself, on the role of philosophy in history and in the present and its relationship with other sciences, and with art and religion, on the relationship between philosophy and technique, on the emancipatory character of philosophical reflections against all obscurantism and on the teaching of philosophy in the academy. Professor Edmilson, in the long years of dedication to study and teaching, practiced philosophy with freedom of thought, without shying away from controversial debate, and dedicating himself to the most relevant questions and thinkers of the philosophical tradition. What justifies this fair tribute. I don't know if Edmilson will agree with this interpretation of what philosophy is, which is one of many possible ones, and to tell the truth, quite traditional.
